It is relatively elegant to find remaindered books to sell online at a profit. This article gives an account of my greatest success in this area. I also draw general conclusions from this experience.
A few many years ago the local Dillons closed down for refurbishment. But before closing for sizeably good it turned into a remainders shop selling books at rock bottom prices. Being an incurable bibliophile I was in there several times a week buying books that looked interesting or that I might read. I did not know then that I would turn into a bookseller and sell one of those books at 100 000% profit.

The book bargains in that magic kingdom included classic textbooks at 1 each, and many paperbacks at 20p each.

Now some mathematics.

If I had made 100% profit on a textbook I would have sold it for 2 having made 1 profit. The profit would have been the identical as the price of the book. 100 000% profit would have meant selling it for 1000

My 100 000% success was not obtained with a 1 textbook (unfortunately). The best I have been able to make on textbooks is around 30 (only 3000% profit!) The 100 000% success was obtained with a book I bought for 1p and sold for 10.

The book was one of the Penguin Classic 60 series that Dillons had decided to sell off for 1p a copy! Thinking they would decorate a windowsill or two I bought about a hundred of them.

The book in question, at last we come to it, was

Sex and Violence, or Nature and Art by Camille Paglia

How did I know I could sell it for 10? There we are no other sellers on Amazon at the time. How could I understand how to set the price? I searched for it on Abe Books and found a couple of sellers selling it for over 10. This inspired me to undercut the price slightly and sell it on Amazon for 10. It sold in a few weeks.

I just looked on Amazon and viewed that a seller is now selling the identical book for 0.01! Amazon is full of inexperienced sellers who vastly under-price their books.

Do not fall into this trap, see what price serious booksellers on abe books are selling their books for and price accordingly.

So in summary, keep your radar polished to find remainder book stores selling at rock bottom prices AND make sure you resell your books at the highest prices the SERIOUS book sell will support.
